The course is aimed introduce students from Visual Communication to designing for interactive media. The course is meant to introduce the main design areas within interactive media, such as the design of visual surfaces and the design of information architecture and work-flows, as well as it implies a brief approach to pervasive computing.
The course period is divided into two main sections, the first two weeks of the course will mainly be dominated by technical and "hands-on" work, while the second section concentrates on the development of conceptual skills and is supposed to create an understanding of the specific challenges of designing for interactive media. The second period focues on research, analysis and concept development.
During the first period, students receive a technical training in web-relevant coding and software. They will be asked to deliver a independently elaborated project that demonstrates the learned technical skills in a playful and experimental way. During the the second period, students elaborate a mainly conceptual solution to a given problem under an utopic angle, demonstrating their research and analytic skills as well as their creative and visionary skills. Students may work in groups during the second period - group work is not wanted during the first period.
After the course period is finished, students are expected to further develop their technical skills and to be able to follow other Interaction Design/Interactive Media courses.
