Typedesign with Andrea Tinnes

Course description

During this period we will look at the principles and "rules"; of type design as well as various typefaces and alphabets. Students will learn an awareness of letterforms, rhythm and proportion, the connections between individual characters, words, sentences (keywords: x-height, ascenders, descenders, counter, baseline, contrast, point size, ligatures, modulation, serif, sans, slab serif, decorative, blackletter, stem, swash, weight etc.) This workshop is part of a series of events around the phenomenum of typography in motion. Students joining the course are recommended to also join the motion design/title sequence course unit in week 02-06. Both course units are designed for students from Visual Communication with good graphic and typographic skills. We will look at the font editor software Fontlab 4.6. Students will learn how to use the basic features such as the user interface, outline editing and drawing tools, windows and dialog boxes as well as how to edit and generate print and screen fonts etc. Students will be assigned to design a typeface, (or main characters of the alphabet) for a specific existing film. The designed type face will be used in a title sequence later on in week 02-06.
